The Trump administration has notified Congress of a sale to Saudi Arabia that includes:
➤ 5,000 BLU-117 x 2,000-pound bombs ➤ 5,004 BLU-111 x 500-pound bombs ➤ 10,004 extended-range JDAM guidance kits, which convert unguided bombs into precision-guided weapons
Boeing would serve as the principal contractor for the proposed transfer, which comes amid renewed Saudi airstrikes in Yemen. Saudi Arabia previously led a devastating 7-year military intervention there from 2015 until a UN-brokered truce in 2022. The conflict caused an estimated 377,000 deaths from military violence, hunger, disease, and the collapse of essential services by the end of 2021, according to the UN Development Programme.
It is not yet a finalized contract. Journalist Aída Chávez (@aidachavez) noted that any senator can force a vote on an effort to block the sale. Congress has a 30-day review period following the September 4 notification.
